As we reported in June, the next generation of Jaguar XJ will have an electric powertrain. CEO Dr. Ralf Speth has referred to the next XJ as being “all-electric” and “full-electric”, suggesting there might be no petrol or diesel XJs whatsoever.
AutoExpress published a teaser of the next-generation XJ, displayed at Jaguar Land Rover’s interview this week at the Frankfurt motor show.
2021 Jaguar XJ Style
It reveals a short rear deck and full-width LED tail-lights, the light components dipping downwards as on present Jaguar models. It appears to align the next XJ better to other vehicles in the company’s stable, whereas the existing XJ has rear-end styling significantly distinct from lower Jags.
The boot appears much shorter than that of the XE and XF which could recommend a liftback body style à-la the Tesla Model S. Given how brief sedan boot lids have been getting lately. Nevertheless, that’s not ensured.
Speaking of sedans, Dr. Speth described the new XJ as “the world’s very first, full-electric luxury sports saloon”, apparently ignoring the Tesla Model 3. If production begins soon, nevertheless, Jaguar will at least beat the Germans to the full-size electric sedan market, as it finished with the I-Pace electrical crossover.
2021 Jaguar XJ Production
Jaguar Land Rover has promised to construct the XJ in the UK regardless of the turmoil in British automotive production following the Brexit referendum and the continuous political circumstance.
It’ll be produced at the same Castle Bromwich plant as the existing model (above), with battery production happening in a new plant in Hams Hall set to be up and running next year.
The quaintly-named Hams Hall plant needs to be able to produce batteries for as lots of as 150,000 Jaguar Land Rover products annually.
Dr. Speth stated: “If battery production goes out of the UK, then automobile production will head out of the UK. The battery is 40 percent of the expense of an electric vehicle– we want to keep this type of included value inside the UK”.
Jaguar Land Rover plans to develop a range of electrified vehicles along with the XJ at Castle Bromwich, although it hasn’t verified yet which models.
It’s excellent news for the car manufacturing market in the UK. The market has been rocked this year by numerous closure announcements, Ford shuttering its Bridgend engine plant and Honda revealing its Swindon engine plant will be nearby 2021. PSA is also threatening to close the Vauxhall factory in Ellesmere if there’s a no-deal Brexit.
After nine years, production of the X351-series XJ ended in July though leftover stocks stay. Jaguar hasn’t revealed when production of the new model will begin.
